Lionel Scaloni to remain as Argentina coach for Copa America 2024
Messi’s Argentina aims to make history.
After winning the FIFA World Cup 2022, Lionel Scaloni, the head coach of Argentina, considered stepping down. However, Lionel Messi’s former teammate ultimately decided to stay on. Scaloni will continue as the coach of the blue and white team until the Copa America competition.
This year’s Copa America will be hosted in the United States, running from June 20 to July 14. Argentine media outlet TYC Sports has dismissed rumors of Scaloni’s departure, reporting that he will remain as Argentina’s coach at least until the end of Copa America.
Renowned Italian football journalist Fabrizio Romano revealed in a post on the X handle that Scaloni met with Argentine Football Association president Fabian Tapia and decided to continue as the coach until Copa America.
The last Copa America was held in 2021, where Argentina, led by Messi and Angel Di Maria, defeated Brazil 1-0, winning the trophy for the first time in 28 years.
Scaloni took over as Argentina’s coach in 2018. In 2021, he led Argentina to the Copa America title, ending a 36-year drought. Then, at the age of 45, he led Argentina to become world champions in Qatar, ending a 36-year wait.
